About Liposuction

Despite how much you watch what you eat and exercise, you might still be bothered by pockets of fat that prevent you from being confident in how you look. The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology offers advanced methods of liposuction to effectively eliminate fat from the body. Surgical liposuction by our double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Paul S. Gill, is a body contouring procedure that reduces pockets of fat from the flanks, tummy, buttocks, and/or thighs. As one of the most requested and popular fat removal surgeries, liposuction is a versatile procedure utilized not only for localized fat removal but also assist in combination surgeries. Liposuction will generally always be a technique used in breast reductions, mommy makeovers, abdominoplasty, or neck contouring.

People who assume liposuction is just a procedure for weight reduction would be wrong. Liposuction takes targeted fat from very specific areas of the body where the remaining tissues will be contoured or shaped a certain way. A small, healthy amount of fat is removed with liposuction. At The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, Dr. Gill and his team can treat multiple body parts with liposuction in one scheduled surgery, if it is deemed safe for the situation and patient. During your consultation, Dr. Paul Gill will assess the areas of your body you wish to address and discuss your cosmetic surgery goals. If you have multiple areas of concern, please let Dr. Gill know. He can present you with a treatment plan for a single procedure or in combination with other body contouring techniques. We want you to look and feel amazing after you heal from liposuction.

Ideal Candidates

Fat removal surgery is a terrific treatment for men and women who are at an ideal weight but have troublesome areas of fat that are difficult to shed, even with a healthy lifestyle. Men and women interested in liposuction should have firm skin because liposuction is not a treatment for stretched-out skin. Females undergoing liposuction should have no plans to become pregnant again, as this may compromise the lasting outcome. It's also important to know that liposuction is not a solution for weight loss. At the time of your consultation for surgery, Dr. Gill will set realistic expectations in targeting areas, such as:

  • The neck, cheeks (buccal fat), and chin
  • The thighs, calves, and ankles
  • The upper arms, underarms, and chest
  • The abdomen and back
  • The buttocks, hips, and flanks

Surgical Technique

A liposuction procedure at our Houston and The Woodlands, TX plastic surgery practice may require 45 minutes to two hours of your time. Keep in mind that a large volume liposuction may require a hospital stay. A general anesthetic is used in large volume fat removal and a local anesthesia is implemented for limited procedures. Based on the number of sections being treated, your procedure may take several hours.

Small incisions are made near the specified areas. A tumescent solution infiltrates the fatty tissue, which makes it firmer and easier to dislodge the fat for removal. The tumescent technique also offers the benefits of lidocaine and epinephrine solutions, which promote comfort and ease during the procedure. A cannula is a special tool that will be inserted to make it easier for Dr. Gill to loosen the fatty tissue that is being cleaned out. Bodily fluids that are lost during surgery are replaced intravenously. Dr. Gill will close the small incision if needed. In the separate area for recovery, your post-op nurse will assist you with managing any discomfort and look after your treated areas until you are discharged.

What to Expect

After your liposuction, you may experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. With a small drainage tube beneath the skin, excess fluid is collected outside of the body to avoid buildup at the surgical site. A snug compression garment will be worn to control swelling and to acclimate your skin to the new contour. Dr. Gill may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection. Don’t expect to look or feel great immediately after liposuction. Although the latest techniques can reduce post-operative discomfort, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding, and temporary numbness. Pain can be controlled with medications prescribed by Dr. Gill, but you will likely feel stiff and sore for a few days.

You may need to stay at home for recovery from liposuction for an extended period based on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It's typical to have bruising and swelling for 1 – 2 weeks and you should have stitches taken out 7 – 10 days after surgery. The most important thing to do following any surgery is to give your body time to rest and recover. When you decide to go back to your normal routine after your surgery, you should remember to minimize stress and strenuous activity. To increase your strength and stamina, try walking and light workouts as recommended by Dr. Gill. Remember, you may notice some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take around 6 – 10 months until your new body contour and shape are visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is nonsurgical liposuction?
There are several nonsurgical procedures to reduce body fat. CoolSculpting treatments and Kybella injections are two types of fat reduction techniques we use at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology.  Although these nonsurgical procedures can help reduce mild to moderate cases, a surgical liposuction gives the best outcomes for most people. Liposuction surgery produces more dramatic and consistent results. Ask Dr. Gill about our nonsurgical options in your consultation. He can explain the pros and cons of each in relation to your body to help you choose which is best for you.

What about loose skin?
Liposuction surgery only corrects excess fat. For loose skin, Dr. Gill may recommend combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Lipo is often performed in tandem with skin tightening surgery, like a tummy tuck, thighplasty, or arm lift, to give you exceptional results.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. This will cause scars; however, Dr. Gill does his best to reduce their appearance. This delicate process starts with making thin incisions in less visible areas or the natural creases of your body. After your surgery, Dr. Gill or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your incisions so they heal properly and smoothly.

Will my results last?
Before liposuction, it is important to be prepared to maintain your weight. Although liposuction reduces the amount of fat cells in an area, you can still lose and gain weight. Dr. Gill suggests that you be at or close to a healthy weight prior to liposuction. Afterward, it's best to remain within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Getting pregnant after liposuction will also alter your results; however, another surgery, like a mommy makeover, may be done to refresh your body after baby.
