Liposuction or Tummy Tuck: Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, The Woodlands, Conroe, Texas
Lipo & Tummy Tuck Education
Welcome to another edition of the Gill Plastic Surgery Patient Education series. Today's topic revolves around who is a good candidate for liposuction and who would benefit from a tummy tuck. This is a very common question we see in our practice, and there's some very specific criteria that assist. Let's begin with what exactly does liposuction do?
Liposuction traditionally treats fatty tissue excess. It is not a weight loss procedure, but it is a contouring procedure meant to address problematic areas. Liposuction works by injecting a tumescent solution to help liquefy the fatty tissue, which is followed by suction utilizing a small cannula. This cannula removes fatty tissue and nothing else. We then utilize compression garments to minimize swelling and to allow for appropriate skin molding to the new form. Traditionally, liposuction does nothing for loose muscle, and does very little for loose skin. Some of the newer laser liposuction techniques, or my preference, ultrasonic liposuction, can provide some degree of skin tightening, but we must be realistic in its limitations too. If all you have is a hammer, the whole world is a nail.
There are other solutions. A tummy tuck is designed to address, not only patients that have a loose fatty tissue, but also have loose skin and loose muscle. This is often caused by pregnancy, aging, and weight loss. Therefore, if a patient has a large amount of loose skin and loose muscle, they will need a tummy tuck as their primary procedure, and we can also utilize liposuction, in conjunction, to offer a superior result. In patients that have good skin tone, and little or no muscle laxity, but simply have problematic areas of fatty deposits, liposuction is a beautiful procedure.
Most importantly is determining the right solution for the right problem. This is where consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon, trained in all techniques, can offer you a superior result. I hope this has been helpful and please feel free to visit our website or contact our office for any questions you may have. Thank you.
