About Microneedling

If you are looking for a new way to revitalize your skin, would you be willing to try a minimally invasive procedure, like microneedling? Give microneedling a chance at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology's Firenze Derma Spa in The Woodlands, TX. If your at-home, over-the-counter products are giving you so-so results, maybe it is time for something new. Our doctors, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul S. Gill, and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anita A. Gill perform microneedling (collagen induction therapy) with the Eclipse MicroPen on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, and legs to treat a wide range of conditions:

  • Fine lines and moderate wrinkles
  • Scars from acne, surgery or injury
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Stretch marks
  • Premature aging from sun exposure
  • Enlarged pores

These skin-restorative microneedling treatments use multiple fine needles to effectively and safely make micro-injuries in the skin, which prompt the natural production of elastin and collagen. These two nutrients will enhance the overall health and appearance of your complexion. Often performed with other treatments, such as vitamin serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), microneedling may help minimize scars, pores, and stretch marks. Make an appointment for a consultation at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology to discover more about the results of microneedling and how to personalize your procedure for your skin concerns and goals.

Adding in PRP

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a nonsurgical treatment injected or applied to your skin for rejuvenation. With a small collection of your own blood, we can make the PRP by separating your blood in a centrifuge. This process divides your blood from the plasma and platelets, which are then reinjected into your skin to promote collagen production, as well as the formation of new skin cells. PRP therapy is very safe and effective because it utilizes your own platelets, which helps aid in tissue repair, the growth of new cells, collagen production, and tissue regeneration. It results in smoother, tighter skin, giving you a much younger appearance.

Ideal Candidates

Many men and women of all ages find it hard to keep their skin looking young despite all the effort they put into living a healthy lifestyle. When your skin is not looking as young and supple (even after a great at-home skin care regimen, you could try microneedling to add to your routine. As we grow older, we experience many changes within our bodies. However, the most obvious changes are the visible signs of aging. These include the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, Crow’s feet, laugh lines, puffiness, dark circles, and many more. Microneedling can help ease some of these signs of aging by inducing new collagen production.

Procedure Technique

In one of our treatment rooms, we will have you sitting in a relaxed position to use the Eclipse MicroPen, which has a sterile needle tip containing 12 tiny microneedles. Your skin care professional will apply a thin layer of topical lidocaine to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, this electric pen will be turned on to be gently pressed against your skin while simultaneously being glided in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered. Treatment time depends on the size of the treatment area and usually takes about 15 – 30 minutes.

There is no downtime to recover from the procedure, but the treatment will result in redness that resembles a raspberry or scrape. The redness may take anywhere from 24 hours to 4 days to disappear. If you receive treatment in an area that you cannot easily conceal, you may want to allow time for the treatment site to heal (like on a long weekend).

What to Expect

Visible improvements to the treated area will begin to appear over 2 – 3 weeks. Continued improvement may continue for up to 6 months following treatment. Wondering how many treatments you will need? Some patients only require one microneedling session each year. For optimal results, we usually perform 2 – 3 microneedling appointments at intervals of 2 – 4 weeks apart. More severe or advanced conditions, such as scars or deeper wrinkles, can require up to eight sessions spaced anywhere from 2 – 6 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does microneedling cost?
Costs for microneedling will depend on what's in your plan. In your consultation, Dr. Gill will evaluate your skin and then create your personalized plan. Once this is done, he or she will go over your treatment costs and the procedure process. The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology frequently has discounts on treatment packages so ask about our current deals in your appointment.

What exactly is microneedling?
Collagen induction therapy or microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure to improve the health of your skin. A natural fibrous protein, collagen helps your skin stay smooth, supple, and firm. As you get older, your supply of collagen is reduced and your skin gets thin and less elastic. This causes tiny skin wounds. These micro-injuries force your skin to generate new skin cell growth and increase collagen production. After a short recovery period, your complexion is healthier, firmer, and brighter.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
In the process of microneedling, channels are made that help other treatments to reach the lower layers. That's why microneedling is commonly done before other skin treatments, such as special serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma). In your initial consultation, either Dr. Gill will talk about which treatments would enhance your microneedling and which can help your skin's health.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
On the whole, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Skin injuries created by microneedling are so minor, there are usually no side effects afterward. Microneedling can be performed on most skin areas, including the arms, face, neck, chest, thighs, and calves. This technique is not recommended if you've been on Accutane in the last few months, or if you have an open wound, active skin infection, or herpes simplex. Additionally, you might not be able to get microneedling if you're nursing, pregnant, or going through radiation therapy.
