About IPL

When you are bothered by how your skin appears because of dark spots, fine lines, or sun damage, The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology skin care professionals can perform a skin consultation at The Woodlands, TX office to determine if you could benefit from IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy. A treatment with IPL with our Palomar ICON laser is a treatment that rejuvenates the skin for adults with hyperpigmentation or wrinkle problems on their neck and face. Other common skin issues, like lines, creases, and wrinkles, can appear due to old age, lifestyle choices, and stress. IPL may be a noninvasive process; however, it can be highly effective and create amazing outcomes.

Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul S. Gill and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Anita A. Gill provide this treatment with powerful pulses of light energy that warm the skin cells to set off the natural healing process and increase the production of collagen. As the added nutrients take effect, you should begin to see a healthier complexion with a refined tone and modified spots of pigmentation. Have your skin evaluated for an IPL treatment by calling our office or requesting a consultation online.

Ideal Candidates

IPL reaches the deeper layers of your skin to treat several complexion issues, such as rosacea or blemishes (particularly brown lesions and sun spots), with minimal or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for an IPL at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology will have several problems with their complexion, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, wrinkles, visible pores, redness, freckles, sun and age spots, or spider veins. One of our doctors will examine your complexion to determine if you will benefit from IPL during your initial consultation. The ICON laser is useful for addressing and correcting many skin problems. With new collagen production, your skin will gain an improved texture, a healthy glow, and a suppleness that it did not have before. You can also use it to treat the appearance of veins on the face or elsewhere on your skin. If you are troubled by sunspots or other pigmentation issues on your face or hands, the ICON laser can eliminate these problems very effectively. You can also use IPL to address vertical lines that appear above the lips due to aging or smoking. These lines can make your face look older and less attractive. You can also address wrinkles on the face, neck, chest, and hands to rejuvenate your skin without harmful side effects.

If you are pregnant or planning your pregnancy, you may need to wait to get ICON laser treatments. Inform Dr. Gill about this during your consultation. If you have skin allergies or a medical condition, it is also important that you inform Dr. Gill about these problems.

Procedure Technique

Your IPL treatment sessions will be performed at our The Woodlands, TX office in around 20 – 30 minutes in one of our minor procedure rooms if no other treatments are performed. To prepare for the process, your technician will wash and dry your skin before protecting your eyes with shields. The laser session is performed using a handheld wand that will pass over the skin while emitting laser energy pulses. While many patients may have mild discomfort (you may feel a slight tingling when the laser is used on the skin) throughout the treatment, IPL is usually bearable given the quick treatment length. You may experience a bit of swelling in the treatment area, which will subside soon. You can resume your normal routine immediately after your session is complete.

What to Expect

There usually is no recovery period needed with IPL, but you may leave our office with your complexion a little red and inflamed. This will go away naturally in about a day — it may be masked with cosmetics if you prefer. The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology recommends you use a cream on the skin to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It may also help to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to help ease swelling. After 2 – 5 days, the irregularities under the skin will rise to the surface skin layers and then start to flake away. It is crucial to protect your skin with sunscreen as often as possible after an IPL session and to not pick at your skin while it heals. While you will have visible improvements after your first treatment, your complexion will attain ideal results with multiple treatments. We suggest most patients get 3 – 6 sessions scheduled monthly at The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does IPL cost?
Every patient case is unique, which means the cost of IPL will be dependent on your unique condition. The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology offers monthly specials and accepts many forms of payment. During your initial visit, we can help estimate your cost and determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

How quick are the results from IPL?
Improvements can be seen after each treatment, but the best results can be seen a month after a full series of treatments is completed. It’s common for patients to respond differently to each treatment session. Patients will see a gradual improvement of redness, blotchiness, sunspots, and age spots over time.

What are the possible side effects of IPL?
Most patients experience mild side effects, like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These subside within a day or two after the procedure. Patients will not be sun sensitive, but they should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will affect the results of the procedure. Patients should always wear sunscreen to protect their skin and decrease the appearance of redness, brown spots, wrinkles and skin cancer.

Do I need to prep for IPL?
Patients about to undergo an IPL laser treatment are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. You should discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment and may be asked to take aspirin or ibuprofen a week before the procedure to help prevent bruising. You should also protect the treated areas with sunscreen between sessions.

Why so many sessions?
A full series of IPL sessions are required in order to provide gradual, natural-looking improvement with little to no risk of the patient’s safety. Multiple sessions also allow for longer-lasting results.
