About Breast Lift Surgery
Age brings wisdom and experience, but it also brings on the effects of gravity, which can cause once firm and pert breasts to droop and lose volume. This is why The Woodlands and Houston, TX double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Paul S. Gill performs intricate breast lift procedures for women with sagging breasts. Mastopexy (known as a breast lift) can be implemented to correct varying degrees of breast droop, from mild to severe droop in which the nipple actually points downward.
This breast recontouring surgery is performed for women who have lost breast firmness, size, and shape, and who are experiencing ptosis (sag) due to pregnancy, weight loss, or aging. In addition to correcting breast sag, the breast lift procedure works to restore breast firmness and may be combined with a breast augmentation procedure to increase the size and projection. In order to achieve the desired result, Dr. Gill will perform one of three surgical incisions that may be made in the breast crease, from the nipple down to the breast crease, or around the nipple/areola complex. Your incisions will vary, depending on the severity of your breast droop. By implementing the latest methods, Dr. Gill can choose the appropriate technique based upon the degree of distortion present, keeping in mind your desired result.
You may come to The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology wanting breast augmentation using implants, but after a private assessment, you may discover that breast lift surgery is what you need. Breasts that have lost elasticity most often need a skin removal and tightening surgery to reduce skin looseness and bring the breasts to a perkier position. If you have nipples that droop downward and your breasts sag significantly below the crease, a lift surgery can dramatically help their appearance. If you are contemplating a breast lift, you need to be in good health, at a good weight, a nonsmoker, and have realistic expectations about plastic surgery. We find that women who have undergone pregnancy, aging, and weight loss to be excellent candidates for a breast lift.
Breast Lift Reviews
"Dr. Gill and his staff are AMAZING! I had a breast lift done 4 weeks ago and absolutely love the results. I definitely recommend him!!!"- K.I. / Google / Nov 17, 2018
"I highly recommend Dr. Gill!Dr. Gill and his staff are very professional and they make you feel at home. The quality of care they provide is really top notch. I had never had surgery before or been under anesthesia but they made me feel at ease. I am still blown away by my results and what Dr. Gill was able to accomplish with my breast lift and implants; plastic surgery really is an art that he has mastered. I'm still in disbelief when I look in the mirror. I was recommended to Dr. Gill by two friends of mine who were also very pleased with their results. I'm so glad I pulled the trigger and finally did it! I feel more confident and I'm excited to wear clothes that I would not have felt comfortable in before. I will continue to go to The Gill Center for any plastic surgery or dermatology procedures."- J.B. / Google / Jan 31, 2019
On the day of your 2 – 3-hour outpatient surgery for a breast lift, you will be taken to an operating room where you will be placed under a general anesthetic. Once prepped and ready for surgery, Dr. Gill will make the incisions to remove your loose skin with or without some glandular tissue. This will effectively tighten and elevate your bustline. Your breasts will be reshaped into a more youthful appearance and the nipple may be repositioned as well. Dr. Gill performs a breast lift in several different ways, depending on the amount of sagging present and also the amount of asymmetry. We base the amount of sagging by comparing the relative position of the nipple to the inframammary fold or crease of the breast. Dr. Gill measures your breasts to see how much is needed to achieve the appropriate placement of the nipple.
If the patient only needs 2 – 3 centimeters of nipple lift, then Dr. Gill will typically accomplish the lift with an incision simply around the areola. Anywhere from 3 – 6 centimeters of nipple lift can be performed with what’s called a lollipop incision (an incision made around the areola and then vertically from the nipple to the crease). However, if the nipple needs to be raised more than 6 centimeters, Dr. Gill will utilize a Wise pattern or anchor incision, which is made around the areola vertically from the nipple to the crease along with an incision within the crease. This incision protects your blood supply to the nipple and hides the incision within the bra line. At this point, an implant or a fat transfer can be inserted in the breast if this was discussed with Dr. Gill ahead of surgery. If the breast lift is the only procedure being performed and if size and shape are a worry, augmentation surgery with implants can be implemented at a different date. In most situations, the size of the areola will be reduced to be symmetric with the new nipple placement and shape of the breast. To finish the surgery, Dr. Gill will close the incisions and cover them with a surgical dressing. A thin tube is may be inserted near the location of the incision to help with excess fluid leakage that can often occur after a surgical procedure.
What To Expect
Our breast lift patients usually take off work for approximately a week to provide time for swelling and bruising to go down and to minimize any unnecessary trauma to the incisions. You should be able to return to normal activities in 7 – 10 days, except for heavy lifting or putting excess tension on the incisions for four weeks. Dr. Gill recommends taking a week off from a desk job and basic activities. In 4 – 6 weeks, your activity restrictions should be lifted. During your recovery time, you will wear a surgical bra that provides necessary support during healing. Any discomfort you may experience will be managed with medication. Bruising or swelling will be temporary. It may take a year for the visible scar to fade and flatten out. Dr. Gill or a member of his team will provide in-depth, home treatment care instructions to help with your healing process. Aesthetic results after a breast lift surgery become evident after a few weeks as the breasts take their higher placement on your bustline. Your breasts will feel and appear natural, and you will look younger and more healthy. Moving forward, you should recognize that the results of your surgery are not permanent as a breast lift does not prevent further droop caused by aging and gravity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a breast lift cost?
During your initial appointment, Dr. Gill will pay attention to your wants and goals before creating your personal treatment plan. Following that, he can estimate your price. When done well, a breast lift will significantly enhance your physical appearance so it is important to concentrate on having a skilled surgeon with years of training, like Dr. Gill, rather than prices. To help make surgery affordable, The Gill Center for Plastic Surgery and Dermatology will help you find low-interest financing.
Do I need a breast lift or breast implants?
Whether you should have a breast lift, implants, or both depends on your specific goals. Oftentimes, a breast lift will enhance the form and fullness of your breasts with no need for implants. Dr. Gill will evaluate your physical condition and also listen to your goals at your consultation, then make a decision whether you would benefit from implants, a lift, or an augmentation plus a lift.
Will my nipples be moved?
Generally, the nipple-areola complex will be moved up in the breast lift. If your areolas are excessively large or stretched, then Dr. Gill can incorporate an areola reduction in your surgery. This may be discussed during your appointment so he can choose the ideal incision pattern to use in your breast lift.
How long will my results last?
With good care following surgery, your results can last for several years. Your breasts will still age normally, which means you could start to see loose and sagging skin in time. Factors, such as significant weight loss or gain, can change your results; therefore, it is best to stay at a steady weight following your breast lift. Pregnancy or breastfeeding following a breast lift may also alter your results, which is why Dr. Gill suggests patients wait until they are done having kids to get a breast lift.
Can a breast lift fix asymmetry?
A lift may improve asymmetry in your breasts if they're different in size, firmness, or level of sagging. Dr. Gill will evaluate the appearance and condition of your breasts in your consultation and talk about how a lift will be able to help. In your lift surgery, he will adjust the tissue so your breasts will adjust the tissue for your breasts to be as equal as possible in position and size for symmetry.
What are realistic expectations for a patient having a breast lift?
Realistically, surgery cannot always correct all asymmetries or levels of ptosis. Sometimes if there is a significant size discrepancy, shape discrepancy, or a significant asymmetry, Dr. Gill may stage a procedure if it is necessary to achieve desirable goals.
